putting kindness into action

PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and put it into action by deciding on the one of twelve ideas that we had. We decided by finding out which action was better and which one would work more efficiently.

Reflection:
For our final product our group made the kindness cards printed and laminated them and handed them out at the gate but i couldn't get there on time.  

How did our action build a sense of community in the school? By letting all the students be more caring and kind.

I contributed by helping make the kindness quotes and cutting them out.

I think the PBL might impact on others by giving someone a cheerful quote if they were having a bad day.

What I learned about working with others was that it is easier to work with someone then without.

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for. 

S for Science

T for Technology

E for Engineering

A for the Arts

and M for Maths

Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.

Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because the mnms weight was lighter

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.

How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My highlight from this PBL was that we sold out in half an hour

Next time I would lower the price of the bath bombs so more people would buy them

have you ever wanted a bath to look like a rainbow?

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;

What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?



First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.  Culture is. tradition, where you
are from, food type and special occasions.

Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage.
I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.

In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on
Maori legends. I read how the giraffe got its long neck  I have written my own legend called how the Lion
got its mane i retold the legend of how the lion got its mane in my own words.



We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script,

some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organizing the music and
others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection: 

For our production I contributed by being a musician. I was playing the percussion and the sound effects. 



I think the show might impact on others by teaching others about battle of the mountains.



What I learned about working with others was that you need to be confident about what your doing.
